On Sunday afternoon I had the pleasure of heading to Healesville in the beautiful Yarra Valley to present a cheque to our Art with Heart 2010 beneficiary –Worawa Aboriginal College. Art with Heart is our annual art exhibition that raises money for different organisations, it started as a way for us to combine our creative talents as brand designers with our belief that we should each play a part in making the world a better place.
So off I drove with giant cheque in tow, to Worawa. Worawa is Victoria’s only registered Independent Aboriginal community-controlled school and is located on 65 hectares of land that once formed part of the Coranderrk Aboriginal Station. A full boarding school, Worawa caters for adolescent Aboriginal girls in the middle years of schooling, Years 7-10.
Worawa was established as a response to the needs of Aboriginal students and difficulties these students experience within the mainstream educational system and is the only indigenous girl’s boarding school in Australia. I had been invited to attend the opening of the Aboriginal Community Art Exhibition at The Sandra Bardas Art Gallery located on the school grounds so it was the perfect setting to hand over the money raised from our art exhibition.
The element of surprise has always been important to me so I had made a decision not to tell all at Worawa the final amount we had raised, so it was an amazing moment when I presented the cheque for a whopping $28, 779.72 to Lois Peeler the schools principal to the thunder of applause.
It was during that very special moment that I thought about everyone involved in Art with Heart 2010 from the artists, to our sponsors, suppliers, all that donate to our mystery envelope and silent auction donations, our clients, friends and families and all our staff. Without the support of all of us these moments are not possible so I hope you who have contributed can also share in this joy of giving.
It has always been our intention to bring together a community that channels our combined creative energy to raise money for good people who do good things for those in need. We are currently researching organizations for Art with Heart 2011, if you know of a worthy local cause give us a call, we would be more than happy to learn about the great things you’re doing.
Alternatively if you’re a great artist and would like to be involved in our 2011 exhibition give us a call.
