Occa­sion­ally we come across a piece of pack­ag­ing design that is so rich and evoca­tive in its brand story telling that we’re knocked off our perch. From start to fin­ish the design of this pack­ag­ing for El Mil del Poaig Span­ish Olive Oil is stunning.

Cre­ated by Span­ish design­ers Culde­Sac, the pack­ag­ing expe­ri­ence begins with a small wooden crate, sealed with a wax tie to leave the cus­tomer in no doubt as to the qual­ity of the product.

Upon open­ing the crate, the form of the olive oil bot­tle con­tin­ues to sur­prise and delight, look­ing more like a con­tem­po­rary piece of fur­ni­ture design than a func­tional bot­tle. This gem of a piece of brand design is def­i­nitely des­tined to be dis­played on the smartest kitchen coun­ters for years, not buried at the back of the pantry.

    Cer­tainly up there with the best, nor­mally this kind of thing the reserve of per­fume or spir­its or even just con­cept pack­ag­ing. It really demon­strates the value the pro­duc­ers put on their olive oil and at €130+ a bot­tle it deserves it.

    I agree Derek, for some prod­ucts the pack­ag­ing design plays a very active role in posi­tion­ing the brand as ultra pre­mium. €130 might be expen­sive for a bot­tle of oil, but it’s great value for a piece of artwork.

    Remem­ber that good ‘ol tagline “oils aint oils”? This oil aint no ordi­nary oil, what a beau­ti­ful piece of pack­ag­ing design and brand com­mu­ni­ca­tion – even the crate is worth keep­ing, for what I don’t know but I’d cer­tainly keep it!
