Students lead the way in Ferrar’s future!
Ferrari World Design Contest is a competition that was launched by the team from Maranello in collaboration with Autodesk (the project’s technical partner and official sponsor) for schools and universities from the design and automotive sectors not only in Italy but around the world to create the Ferrari of the future.
Each participant is asked to create a pure hypercar using the latest technology and materials, a car with an extreme look (let’s face it, it is Ferrari), whilst being functional in every aspect. The entrants are judged by a jury (under the presidency of Luca di Montezemolo, Chairman of Ferrari) with the winners being awarded an internship at Ferrari’s Centro Stile, lead by Flavio Manzoni, the Senior Vice President of Ferrari.
During the four months from November 2010 through to February 2011, over 400 projects from over fifty schools were submitted to the contest and of this only seven universities were shortlisted. All of the design concepts and ideas focused on reducing fuel consumption through different drive and alternative propulsion systems, particularly hybrid engines which are now very common on our roads today. Another common design facet was the increase of driving pleasure through weight reduction.
Autodesk, the international company behind 3D design and digital media software like alias, autoCAD, and maya, was an integral collaborator in the project providing its 3D modeling software alias to all students, who generated both 2D and 3D mock-ups of their concepts. Entrants then created their own 1:4 scale model of their Ferrari, with the emphasis being on detail and the car interior – as you’ll see, impressive to say the least!
Students from Seoul’s Hongik University won the Ferrari World Design Contest. The Korean university was chosen ahead of the second-placed IED of Turin with London’s Royal College of Arts (RCA) finishing in third position.

What a great initiative for students to be apart of. This a great brand experience by Ferrari, support the creative/innovative students that my in the future be apart of their staff. Ferrari also would gain a lot of die hard brand ambassadors through this process as well. It ticks all the brand boxes really. Very nice.
A great way to use emerging talent and tap into the skills and ideas of our futures leading designers. I would love to see some of these prototypes on the road too!
Tapping into the skills and ideas of our future leading designers and continually challenging and teaching ourselves new methods of design is paramount – a great point you make Hannah.
