  1. Michael,

As FDI, immigration and global competiveness gets even more difficult, nation branding becomes even more crucial.

From sunny Canada, a recent post I wrote on exactly the same issues we face in this area.

    No country is immune evidently.

    Hilton,
Thanks for your thoughts. Interesting reading on your blog too. Are you surprised that Canada is being held up as a nation brand benchmark?
I have to say that I find the USA brand “land of dreams” extremely naff and cringe worthy but I guess it is probably moving for certain audiences!
I appreciate the frustrations of Canadians trying to differentiate from those south of the border – we have a similar issue in the southern hemisphere between Australia and New Zealand (but that is a whole new discussion for another blog)!

  3. Michael,

“Land of Dreams” is hard to stomach unless you’ve spent 15+ years living in the shadow of Old Glory. Friends in the UK have a similar reaction but, casting/settings aside, the insight is IMHO still resonant about the USA. Opportunity & the American Dream is still a huge pull – be it for beleagured citizens or potential immigrants.

As a former Zimbabwean, living in the shadow of South Africa, I can the Oz vs NZ differentiation struggles.

There are 3 debates I’m tracking on Canada branding – my blog, an FB thread and something on the BRANDIXIT group on LinkedIn – all interesting but all struggling to define an inspiring positioning for this great country. Hard to instil energy & vibrancy when most folks see us as “nice” and a “little boring”

What ? the final 5 were professionally created ? I refuse to believe.. it’s obvious from the logos itself that they are amateaur work.. probably interns at some design college or somthing..

  5. michael says:

    Hi Mo,
The original logos were created by ameteurs but I can assure you that the final 5 that are up for voting now, were all created by one of the brand agencies in Dubai.
    Cheers,
    Michael

    Micheal,
You’ve mentioned comments by a few of people, CEO of X branding agency and CD of Z branding agency.. As a professional what’s your own comments on this professional work.. Do you think the logos convey a strong message, leave a memorable mark, recognizable on a billboard to a driver zipping thru at 120 kph ?

    Hi Mo,
Sorry for delayed reply, I’ve been on vacation.
In regards to personal view of the designs, I can’t comment on whether they will deliver on their strategy (as I am not privy to this) but I feel that they are very expected, safe, crude and seem to build on the typical cliches. They are mostly a tweak or refresh of the traditional approach to government or departmental branding in the region.
Reading some of the feedback from the public, I can see how some might resonate and help boost their sense of national pride. However, I don’t think any of them will actually do much to help the UAE differentiate and build a strong nation brand internationally. I feel this is a missed opportunity to truly represent a distinct, compelling, engaging and enduring identity for the UAE. Having said that, the brand mark (logo) is only one piece of the brand and there is still opportunity to develop a powerful brand world around this.
    Cheers,
    Michael
