Web Project Checklist
Being a checklist oriented individual I thought I would share the one I typically use for new or existing web projects. It’s not overly detailed but gives me the required ‘to-do’s’ and helps ensure consistency across all web projects.1. Definition & Concept
Define the scope of the project. The initial ideas, wants and needs. What is the story or message? Conduct analysis of an existing site especially any reporting from analytics or measurables past. Define new measurables for the future. Set targets and goals.
2. Structure/Content & Context
‘Information Architecture’: labels, navigations systems, site flow. What goes where and why! Links, widgets and functionality. Content generation, keyword strategy and SEO optimization. Thought also needs to be given as to how/when this is adapted for mobile and other screens and which content should be shared through social graphs.
3. Design & Layout
Wireframes, placement, color schemes, sizing, templates, the front-end model. How does this span across any existing Social Media channel so the experience is consistent across all touchpoints? Important to work closely here with the technical side to make sure the creative ideas are doable and make sense.
4. Development & Functionality
Building out the frontend/backend. Adapting to the chosen CMS system (if required). Page and navigation implementation and template construction. Once completed content can start to be filled in.
5. Testing, Fine-tuning & Training
Browser testing and usability. Do the results pertain to what was invisioned? Tester: How and why did you click there? Overall fine-tuning. CMS training/manuals given to the update team.
6. Pre-Launch
Marketing and building buzz through Social channels and other touchpoints.
7. Launch
The big bang!
8. Post-Launch
Ongoing SEO optimization and PPC Campaigns. Site maintenance plan, monthly monitoring and reporting.
This checklist is by no means exhaustive but is a great base to work from on every new project.
