The Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (UCCA) is the most dynamic art center in Beijing’s 798 Art District, and since 2007 its UCCA store has been a small temple for vanguard design within the gallery. The original store, now UCCA @ ART.BOOK, is still offering a glut of Chinese art and creativity, with a selection of limited-edition artworks—the fruit of the collaboration between UCCA and more than 40 artists—and a vast selection of art and design books.
Meeting the demands of a growing community of design lovers, UCCA has recently launched a new 300-square-meter space in 798, the UCCA store @ Design. Floor-to-ceiling windows and light wood encase an interior filled with warm light from the marvelous bone lamps by Xie Dong. Overall the space jumps to the forefront of cutting-edge design without becoming ostentatious.
The work of Taiwanese Good Studio, the shop was designed under the theme “Windows.” Throughout the store, a variety of different frames hung on the walls and ceiling encourage visitors “to look out onto a new world.” The frames are meant to open people up to other ways of thinking and to the artist’s genius which—while leading his audience through his world of imagination—crystalizes his creative process in an object of beauty. Besides offering an aesthetic experience for visitors, the store aims to incubate new thoughts and ideas.
What I love about the space is that it is not only the collaboration of 10 Chinese designers and limited-edition collections, but it now showcases the work of 60 of the finest creatives in China—pieces of art, fashion, jewellery, furniture and also colorful fixed gear bikes. It is a truly unique creative space that is a wonderful celebration of all the creative expressions, from traditional wall art to the more fantastical dinosaur book ends.
